How to buy LUMA travel insurance online: 4 steps, papers ready

Before you start: 3 things to have ready (2 minutes)

Golden rule for dates: coverage must span both the departure day and the return day, including transit days and overnight flights that cross midnight. If your itinerary isn't locked yet, buy 1-2 extra days at both ends — it costs a couple of dollars (see real prices) versus redoing paperwork.

The four form steps (about 5 minutes)

Step 1 — Your Trip

Select departure country, destinations, travel dates and number of travellers. The form computes the coverage zone and duration automatically.

Step 2 — Choose Your Plan

The form displays all three plans priced for your exact trip. When choosing, glance at three lines: the medical limit (≥ USD 50,000 clears the Schengen €30,000 bar on every plan), repatriation, and what travel benefits are included — see the plan comparison.

Step 3 — Your Information

Name, date of birth, passport number, email for the certificate. Copy the name directly from the passport data page — one wrong diacritic or transliteration and the certificate needs reissuing.

Step 4 — Pay Online

Card payment. The insurance certificate is issued immediately after successful payment and emailed to you — print it or submit the PDF with your application.

After the certificate arrives: the 60-second check

Don't just file it — open it and check six lines (full detail per line in our plan comparison):

• Medical limit stated as its own line, ≥ the equivalent of €30,000
• Repatriation included (including mortal remains)
• Geography says "Schengen" / all Schengen states (or your destination zone)
• Validity covers departure day through return day, transit included
• Name matches the passport character for character
• Deductible is zero — or you know exactly what it is

If any line is wrong, contact the provider to reissue before you submit — not after an embassy queries it.

Buy before or after applying for the visa?

Buy before submitting — the certificate is a required accompanying document. One timing nuance: if your application is delayed and your itinerary shifts, the certificate must still cover the entire actual trip. In that case, ask the provider about adjusting dates or extending — LUMA confirms extensions are possible before expiry, provided you're not under active medical treatment and your total trip stays under 180 days.
